Best Student Research Competition

The Southern California Chinese-American Environmental Protection Association (SCCAEPA) invites you to submit a research paper for the 2023 Best Student Research AwardsAwards will be presented to the winners during the 2024 SCCAEPA Annual Convention in the Los Angeles area.

Deadline for submission: August 31, 2023 (extended to September 30, 2023)

Topics and Eligibility

Topics are limited to research work related to environmental issues. The research work may include on-going research or work published after September 1 st , 2022. All degree levels (Bachelor, Master,
Doctorate, or other professional degrees) of college students are eligible (degree graduation date should not be before August 2022). Postdoc is not eligible for this competition. Each individual may submit one paper only. The applicant must be the primary author of the paper.

• First prize ($1000)
• Second prize ($500)
• Third prize ($200)

Submission and Format

Submission shall include:

1) Cover letter (please indicate if you will be able to be present to receive the award in person, if selected).
2) A presentation in PowerPoint slides format (less than 25 slides).
3) A 400 to 600-word written summary of the research, which must include, at a minimum: i) Synopsis of the research; ii) Objectives and goals of the research; iii) Discussion of the work performed and results, including the student’s specific role or contribution to the research; iv) Conclusions and recommendations.
4) Applicant’s most recent resume (less than two pages).

All required materials shall ONLY be submitted by e-mail to sccaepa1991@gmail.com by September 302023 for evaluation. The selected winners will be invited to present the paper as a poster or a platform presentation at 2024 SCCAEPA Annual Convention (location and date to be determined).

Review Process and Judging Criteria

Research project will be reviewed by a SCCAEPA student award committee.  All corresponding authors will be notified by October 312023 of the result on their submittals.  The winners must be present to receive the award at the 2024 SCCAEPA Annual Convention.  

The research project will be reviewed and judged on the basis ofthe following criteria:

• Relevance to the theme of environmental protection and significance of the work to a broad audience 
• Application of the academic research to the real worldproblems
• Originality of the work, including new concepts, innovations, or data 
• Scientific and technical merit 
• The completeness of the project, clarity of presentation and quality of the slides
• Student’s specific role and contribution to the project.
