Best Student Research Competition

Background 

Since 2005, the Southern California Chinese-American Environmental Protection Association (SCCAEPA) has been hosting the Best Student Research Awards.  Past winners are now professors, managers and distinguished professionals in the environmental field.

After a brief siesta due to the pandemic, we resumed the competition this year. We are excited to annouce the winners of the Best Student Research Awards Competition!

2023 Winners 

This year, we received many applications from outstanding students from all over Southern California. The selection committee was impressed by the high quality of research and the students’ passion for environmental protection. After careful review, the committee has selected the following winners:

First Place:
    • Bosin Jin, University of California, Riverside, for the research on Aerobic biotransformation and defluorination of fluoroalkylether substances (ether PFAS): substrate specificity, pathways, and applications
Second Place:
    • Zekun Liu, University of California, Riverside, for the research on PFAS Removal by Nanofiltration: Overlooked Permeation of Perfluoroalkane Sulfonamides (FOSAms) and Technical Solutions
    • Yen Hsiang Huang, University of California, Irvine, for the research on Sensing Antibiotics in Wastewater Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering
Third Place:
    • Jialin Dong, University of California, Irvine, for the research on Prediction of 35 Target Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in California Groundwater using Multi-label Semi-supervised Machine Learning
    • Lei Yang, University of California, Riverside, for the research on Low Pressure Yields of Stabilized Criegee Intermediates Produced from Ozonolysis of a Series of 1-Alkenes

Recognition

The winners will be recognized at the 2024 SCCAEPA  Annual Convention which is tentatively scheduled for March 2024. We would like to congratulate all of the winners and thank all of the students who applied. Your research is essential to protecting our environment and building a sustainable future.
